Silence Your Chatter Girl

We all have that voice in our heads that replays mistakes, predicts what could go wrong, questions our choices, or keeps us stuck in worry. I call that voice your “Chatter Girl.”

Silencing your Chatter Girl does not mean getting rid of your thoughts. It means learning to recognize when old, conditioned thought patterns take over and creating space between those thoughts and who you really are. In this section, I’ll share insights, ideas, and practical guidance around the thoughts, habits, emotions, and everyday experiences that can influence how we feel, respond, and move through life.

How to Find the Right Therapist for Women in Hickory, NC

How to Find the Right Therapist for Women in Hickory, NC

For women seeking individual counseling in Hickory, NC, the right therapist usually has experience, an approach, availability, and a communication style that fit your goals and preferences. Start by identifying what you want help with, then compare therapists based on relevant experience, their approach to counseling, available session formats, and how comfortable you feel asking questions.

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision. A therapist who works well for one person may not be the right fit for another. Taking some time to evaluate your options can make the process feel more manageable.

Start With What You Want From Counseling

You do not need to have everything figured out before contacting a therapist. It can still help to think about what has led you to consider counseling.

You may be looking for support with anxiety, ongoing stress, relationship changes, difficult decisions, boundaries, life transitions, or another concern affecting your daily life.

Your goals do not have to be perfectly defined. A simple starting point might be, “I have been feeling overwhelmed and want help understanding what is contributing to it.”
Knowing your general reason for seeking counseling can make it easier to determine whether a therapist’s experience and services align with what you need.

If anxiety or stress is one of your main concerns, you may also find it helpful to read about when anxiety and stress begin interfering with everyday life.

Look for Experience That Relates to Your Concerns

When comparing therapists, look beyond broad statements that they provide counseling.

Consider whether their professional information discusses the types of concerns you are currently facing. Someone seeking support with persistent anxiety may have different priorities than someone working through a major transition or relationship concerns.

A therapist’s website, professional biography, and service pages can help you understand their focus areas.

If you are considering working with me, reviewing the About Leslie and Individual Counseling pages can give you more information to help you decide.

Understand How the Therapist Approaches Counseling

Therapists do not all work in the same way.

Some approaches are more structured and may include specific exercises, reflection, or skills to practice between sessions. Others may place more emphasis on exploring experiences, patterns, relationships, emotions, or personal values. Some therapists combine elements from several approaches.

You do not need to understand every counseling term before scheduling. What matters is whether the therapist can explain how they work in language that makes sense to you.

Useful questions can include:

  • How do you typically approach concerns like mine?
  • What might our sessions focus on?
  • How do you and your clients decide what to work toward?
  • What role do I have in setting counseling goals?

Clear answers can help you decide whether the approach feels compatible with what you are looking for.

Pay Attention to Comfort and Personal Fit

Credentials and experience matter, but so does your ability to communicate openly with the therapist.

Counseling often involves discussing experiences or concerns that may be difficult to talk about. You should be able to ask questions, express uncertainty, and discuss whether something in the counseling process is or is not working for you.

You may not know after one conversation whether someone is the right long-term fit. However, you can pay attention to whether you feel heard, whether explanations are clear, and whether the therapist’s communication style feels comfortable enough for you to continue.

A good fit does not mean every session will be easy. It means the counseling relationship builds enough trust and communication for meaningful work to happen.

Compare In-Person and Telehealth Options

Session format may also affect your decision.

Some women prefer in-person counseling because they value having a separate physical space for their appointments. Others may prefer telehealth because it can reduce travel and make counseling easier to fit around work, family, or other responsibilities.

Availability varies by therapist, so confirm which options are currently offered before scheduling.

When comparing formats, consider privacy, scheduling, travel, comfort with technology, and the environment where you feel most comfortable talking.

No single format is automatically right for everyone. The best choice is the one that fits your needs and the options available to you.

Questions to Ask Before Scheduling With a Therapist

You can learn a great deal from a therapist’s website, but it is reasonable to have additional questions.

Depending on what matters to you, you might ask about the concerns they commonly address, session format, scheduling, fees, insurance or payment procedures, or what new clients can expect when getting started.

You can also ask questions that help you evaluate fit, such as how goals are established or how the therapist typically approaches the concerns you want to discuss.

You do not need to ask every possible question before making an appointment. Focus on the information that will help you feel comfortable making the next decision.

How to Decide Whether Leslie May Be a Fit

If you are considering individual counseling with Leslie in Hickory, start by reviewing the information available about her background, services, and approach.

Compare that information with the goals and preferences you have identified for yourself. If you still have questions, contact the practice directly to clarify available services, scheduling, session options, and other details that matter to you.

The goal is not to find a therapist who sounds right for everyone. It is to determine whether the therapist’s services and approach appear to fit what you are looking for.

Taking the Next Step

Finding a therapist can feel like a big decision, but you don’t have to base it on a single factor.

Consider your counseling goals, the therapist’s relevant experience, how they describe their approach, practical details such as scheduling and session format, and how comfortable you feel communicating with them.

If you would like to explore whether my individual counseling services may be a fit, review the Individual Counseling information and use the Contact or Schedule page to ask questions about getting started.
