Trauma Therapy for Women

Compassionate trauma therapy for women in Hickory, NC, and surrounding communities who are navigating the emotional effects of painful, overwhelming, or difficult experiences.

Trauma can affect how you feel, think, and connect with other people, and respond to situations long after an experience has ended. You may find yourself feeling on guard, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, easily triggered, or unsure why certain situations affect you so strongly.

Sometimes trauma is connected to one identifiable experience. Other times, it develops through repeated experiences, relationships, betrayal, loss, or situations in which you did not feel safe or supported.

If past experiences are continuing to affect your present life, I can provide a supportive space to help you understand those patterns and begin responding to them differently. I am based in Hickory, North Carolina, and provide counseling for women in Hickory and surrounding communities, including Conover, Newton, Morganton, Statesville, Charlotte, and Lenoir.

You do not need to tell your entire story all at once. We can begin with what feels most important now and move at a pace that feels manageable.

The Brain and Nervous System

Understanding Trauma

Trauma can influence the brain and nervous system in ways that affect everyday thoughts, emotions, relationships, and reactions.

You may notice that certain situations bring up strong emotional or physical responses. You might avoid reminders of what happened, feel constantly alert to possible danger, struggle to trust other people, or experience memories that seem to pull you out of the present.

At other times, trauma may show up as emotional numbness, self-criticism, difficulty connecting with others, or a sense that you have to stay in control to feel safe.

These reactions can make sense in the context of what you have experienced. In therapy, we can work together to understand how your brain and nervous system learned to respond and begin strengthening patterns that better support your life now.

Space to Understand and Respond

How Counseling Can Help With Trauma

Trauma therapy can provide a confidential space to talk about difficult experiences without having to explain everything perfectly or move faster than you are ready to move.

Depending on your needs, therapy may provide:

  • Support understanding emotional and physical trauma responses
  • Help recognizing triggers and patterns connected with past experiences
  • Skills for feeling more grounded when emotions become intense
  • Support reducing avoidance that may be limiting your life
  • Space to process painful memories when appropriate
  • Help noticing self-critical or fear-based thought patterns
  • Strategies for returning your attention to the present
  • Support rebuilding a greater sense of safety and trust

The goal is not to force you to relive painful experiences. We can focus on what is affecting your life now and determine together what needs attention.

Recognizing Your Experience

This Support May Be Helpful If…

  • Past experiences continue to affect your emotions, thoughts, or relationships.
  • Certain situations trigger strong reactions that feel difficult to control.
  • You frequently feel on guard or watchful for something to go wrong.
  • You avoid people, places, conversations, or situations connected with difficult experiences.
  • You have difficulty trusting others after being hurt or betrayed.
  • You feel emotionally numb or disconnected.
  • You experience painful memories that are difficult to put aside.
  • You regularly blame or criticize yourself for things that happened.
  • You feel as though part of you is still reacting to experiences that are no longer happening.
  • You want support processing what happened while becoming more present in your life now.

Your experience does not need to fit one specific definition of trauma before you reach out.

Working Together

My Approach to Trauma Therapy

I approach trauma therapy from a neuroscience-informed perspective. Trauma can influence how the brain and nervous system respond to perceived danger, and understanding those patterns can make your reactions feel less confusing.

I also have training in EMDR and regularly use trauma-focused work in my practice when it is appropriate for the individual client.

An important part of therapy may involve helping you distinguish between something dangerous that is happening now and a nervous system response connected with something that happened before. We can practice ways to return your attention to the present and help your system recognize that the current moment is different.

I do not believe trauma therapy has to mean spending every session immersed in painful memories. We can combine processing with practical skills, present-moment awareness, and an understanding of how your brain and nervous system respond.

Whether you are seeking trauma therapy in Hickory or live in Conover, Newton, Morganton, Statesville, Charlotte, or Lenoir, we can begin with where you are now.

Compassionate

Talking about painful experiences requires vulnerability. I want you to feel welcomed, respected, and never judged for how you have responded to what happened.

Personalized

Trauma affects people differently. I shape our work around your experiences, responses, needs, and goals rather than expecting you to follow a one-size-fits-all process.

Supportive

We can make room for difficult experiences while also building practical skills that help you feel more grounded and connected to your life today.

A Collaborative Process

4. Apply What You Are Learning

Over time, you can practice responding differently when familiar trauma patterns appear in everyday life.

The pace of therapy can develop gradually as trust and understanding grow.
